Betula Pendula (Silver Birch)– Known as the ‘Lady of the Woods’ for its graceful and elegant appearance, the silver birch is possibly one of the UK’s most recognisable trees. Its distinctive white peeling bark with emerald green triangular shaped leaves, formed in a slightly weeping habit, make a beautiful tree. As well as its admiring appearance, the silver birch also has high environmental and wildlife value. It provides food and shelter to many vertebrates and invertebrates, and acting as a pioneer species it is able to help extend wooded areas into what would otherwise be barren land. This medium sized, extremely hardy tree is favoured for native planting schemes and should certainly not be overlooked.
